Meet Beacon, the Therapy Dog: A Furry Friend for the U.S. Gymnastics Team
At Nicole and Baby, we understand the profound impact pets can have on our lives. This was evident at the 2024 United States Olympic gymnastics team trials in Minneapolis, where athletes had an unexpected but much-loved supporter: a therapy dog named Beacon. This adorable golden retriever, known as the "Goodest Boy," is USA Gymnastics' first official therapy dog, complete with his own staff credential.
Beacon's Impact on the Gymnastics Team
Beacon attended the trials from June 27 to June 30, providing much-needed emotional support to the athletes. Suni Lee, one of the stars heading to the 2024 Paris Olympics along with Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera, shared her appreciation for Beacon on Instagram. She posted a series of photos, including one with Beacon, captioned, "Thank god for Beacon. Day 1 of trials done, onto day 2."
Retired gymnast Laurie Hernandez commented on Lee's post, saying, "In Beacon, we trust," highlighting the dog's importance to the team.
Beacon's Role and Popularity
Beacon has quickly become a favorite among both the athletes and gymnastics fans. His Instagram bio humorously notes his love for "fridge time," swimming, hiking, and making friends. According to his handler, Tracey Callahan Molnar, Beacon acts as an emotional sponge for the athletes. He senses stress and provides comfort, celebrating their successes and supporting them through challenges.
"He picks up on the stress and will pull to that person immediately. They absorb the stress of the people they're relieving the stress off of," Molnar explained to ESPN. Despite often lying still for long periods, Beacon is exhausted afterward from his hard work.
Athletes' Reactions to Beacon
Gymnast Joscelyn Roberson expressed her love for Beacon at the recent national championships in Fort Worth, stating, "Beacon, I just love you so much! He’s so cute! I’ve already told people that this is the best thing that U.S.A. Gymnastics can do for us." The New York Times also reported that Beacon's fur "smells like champagne and raspberry shampoo," adding to his charm.
Will Beacon Go to Paris?
As the team prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics, fans are curious whether Beacon will join them. While it remains to be seen if he will accompany the team to Paris, his impact on the athletes has already been significant.
